Automated Guided
Vehicles
A high-tech fleet of 22 automated guided
vehicles (AGVs) plays a crucial role in the distribution of medical supplies, meals and more across the medical
center.
The physical size of the new campus made it necessary to consider new
ways to support efficient material movement from the loading dock, located on
Flournoy and Paulina streets, to the main hospital each day. These
computerized, laser-guided AGVs fit the bill. Thanks to this new technology, employees no longer have to risk injury by moving heavy loads long distances.
Likewise, supplies are delivered in a timely manner.
The
AGVs travel the approximately 1,200 feet from the loading dock to the
new hospital by an underground tunnel that runs under Harrison Street along the south
side of the new hospital and connects to the Atrium building.
There are three dedicated elevators that carry the AGVs to
their destinations, at which point they are programmed to send a page to the
staff alerting them that their supplies have arrived. The AGVs will make up to
1,000 trips a day delivering medical supplies, meals and clean linens to the
new hospital and the Atrium building.
